Energy Drinks Basically Just Caffeinated Water


A new study found that energy drinks, despite the extra vitamins and boosts, aren't any better than normal caffeine

Pounding a Red Bull might not be the best idea for any time of day, but we admit that during certain late nights, we have fallen back on that method. But it turns out, the extra additives in energy drinks aren't actually that helpful, LiveScience reports.

A study presented at the Association for Psychological Science annual meeting found that 8 ounces of water plus caffeine was about the same as having water plus 5-hour Energy, if the caffeinated drinks were adjusted to the same amount of caffeine per pound.

Specifically, researchers found that participants' brains were just as fast or slow, despite the extra additives that energy drinks boast.

"A lot of people take the energy drinks because they think they have that extra boost over caffeine," study researcher Chelsea Benham said. But the study found that there's little difference in participants' physical reaction times (like clicking a mouse when a letter appeared on the screen), regardless of the drink.

Of course, the study only ran about 20 minutes, so researchers hope to replicate the study over a longer period of time.


Caffeinated Water: Totally Awesome or Just Plain Unhealthy?

You already know that caffeinated drinks like Diet Coke and Red Bull suck for health, even if some of them taste (and feel) like liquid crack. But now there's a new way to get buzzed up in a bottled drink that has many a clean eater fooled by its sweetly innocent appeal: caffeinated water. Despite showing up in the beverage aisle a few years ago, recent (read: better) marketing techniques from a variety of companies have led to a boon to its popularity.

For those who haven't tasted the trend, spoiler alert: Caffeinated water is basically tasteless water mixed with tasteless caffeine in order to make a drink that tastes like, well, water. (Some brands like Avitae, Caffeinated Club, and Krank20 also come in a variety of flavors, with no added sugar, but we're not talking the taste potency here of a Monster Energy, folks.) Depending on the brand, your H2O pick-me-up could contain anywhere from 45 milligrams to 125 milligrams of caffeine in a bottle.

Why not get your caffeine fix from coffee or tea? Our thoughts exactly. But if you think you'd prefer a cold beverage in warmer weather (and haven't been sucked in by the iced coffee trend) or are into the idea of being amped up all the time&mdashwe get it&mdashhere is what you need to know about the myths and truths of the caffeinated water trend.

Claim: It's calorie-free and a healthy way to get my caffeine.
Reality: Yes, caffeinated waters like Element and Water Joe are not only calorie-free, but also sugar-free. Then again, one cup of black coffee has just one calorie and is also sugar free, while tea clocks in with a whopping 2 calories per serving. So your calorie-free argument? It doesn't really hold up. Plus, why drink something out a plastic bottle (hello, BPA and BPA-free chemicals) when you can drink something out of a nice toxin-free ceramic mug?

Claim: Coffee and tea dehydrate me, but caffeinated water won't.
Reality: Caffeine, in any form, is a diuretic. "Even when you're getting caffeine in coffee, you're still consuming a fluid. Water doesn't negate the effects of caffeine," says Felicia Stoler, RD, a nutritionist and exercise physiologist based in New Jersey. And despite their tendency to go right through you, caffeinated beverages won't cause dehydration, adds Stoler.

Claim: It has just as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
Reality: The 125 milligrams of caffeine in a 16.9-ounce bottle of Avitae (the strongest dose we could find) has just as much caffeine as a cup of coffee&mdashif you're drinking a weak brew or something out of a Keurig. Caffeinated water, though, is no match for a tall coffee from Starbucks, which contains a whopping 260 milligrams of caffeine. You might not want to know how much caffeine a venti has. (Of course you do&mdashit has 415 milligrams of the good stuff).

Our verdict? Stick with your usual coffee or tea. They'll give you just as much (if not more) caffeine than caffeinated water would, they're packed with antioxidants, and they actually have a taste that you can enjoy (if brewed correctly). All those other reported health benefits from coffee and tea aren't so bad, either.

"They are electrically charged minerals and compounds that enable our bodies to perform a variety of functions," says Stephanie Jean, an RDN in the Washington, D.C., area. They play a role in everything from regulation blood pressure to regular cell functioning.

If the levels become unbalanced, then that's when you can start to feel ill. You can experience anything from a minor hangover to more serious complications like extreme dehydration.

Jean says that most individuals don't need extra electrolytes outside of a regular, healthy diet, but there are times that your levels can become low, like during excessive drinking or sweating&mdashor as a result of vomiting or diarrhea, which are conditions that can cause the body to become dehydrated. Though these signs alone don't point to the need for electrolytes, dizziness, weakness, a dry mouth, headache, and just not feeling well, can all signal that you may need to call in some reinforcement.

To reap max electrolyte benefits, opt for a drink that contains sodium and possibly potassium or magnesium, says Matheny. Though you can now find plenty of great low- or no-sugar options, a little sugar won't do any harm if you're consuming an electrolyte drink while logging a longer workout.

Best energy drinks for a keto diet

All the energy drinks listed below are keto-friendly.

However, they do contain varying sweeteners, such as sucralose, aspartame, erythritol and others. Each person reacts to sweeteners differently. Try a few sips at a time and assess how your body reacts to any new energy drink that you try for the first time.

Disclaimer: You might be kicked out of ketosis, although it is quite rare. Try these energy drinks in moderation initially to find out how your body reacts to them.

&bull Red Bull Total Zero

The energy drink that is famous all over the world, now it has a sugarless and a 0 calorie version. All of the ingredients in Red Bull Total Zero are keto-friendly. Instead of regular sugar, Red Bull Total Zero uses aspartame and sucralose for sweeteners.

Ingredients: Caffeine, B vitamins, taurine, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K and water.

It contains 80mg of caffeine per 8.4 fl.oz can, which is quite moderate. Therefore, Red Bull is a good option if you are sensitive to caffeine.

The caffeine content is good and it&rsquos sugar-free too, but the price is usually a little higher than some other options.

Rockstar Zero Carb energy drink has zero calories and zero sugar

One of the top energy drink companies, Rockstar has produced various kinds of energy drinks over the years since its establishment. Among them, Rockstar Zero Carb and Rockstar Pure Zero seem to be keto-friendly and both of them don&rsquo contain any sugar either.

However, It must be noted that both of these energy drinks contain an extremely alarming 240mg of caffeine in a single 16 fl.oz can. I don&rsquot know about you, but that&rsquos too much for me.

I personally would only advise drinking these before starting your daily workout or in the morning when you need some caffeine to wake you up. If I were you, I wouldn&rsquot be drinking any of this energy drink in the evening or at night because it will probably disrupt your sleeping cycle, or worse, cause you to become addicted to caffeine.

Similar to Redbull Zero (and all energy drinks for that matter), too much Rockstar Zero Carb can be bad for you. With all energy drinks, it&rsquos important to drink them in moderation to avoid any unwanted side-effects.

&bull Monster Zero Ultra

A keto friendly, Monster Zero Ultra.

Another keto-friendly energy drink with zero sugar and calories is Monster Ultra Zero. If you&rsquore a fan of Monster energy drink, you will probably like Monster Zero Ultra too.

Although Monster Zero Ultra contains 140mg of caffeine per can (more than my preferred 50-100mg per can) it might be a perfect energy drink to power up your tired body.

However, keep in mind that it&rsquos probably not a great idea to drink this energy drink in the afternoon or evening because it might disrupt your sleep due to the fairly high caffeine content .

&bullCelsius Sparkling energy drink

A variety of flavors of Celsius Sparkling energy drinks. They are quite delicious too!

Celsius Sparkling energy drink contains zero sugar which is keto-friendly. It also contains 200mg of caffeine per can, which is quite a lot. Celsius is marketed as a fitness energy drink that helps with providing energy to those that need an extra boost during workouts.

For keto-diet beginners, it would be best not to consume it at night or before going to bed due to the high caffeine content, which might mess with your sleep schedule.
